Understanding the Basics of Sketching Sonic the Hedgehog

To master “how to draw Sonic the Hedgehog,” we start with the basics. What are the steps to draw Sonic? It’s simple when you break it down.

Step 1 – Draw the Nose

Start on the top left side of your page and draw an oval for the nose. Add a small highlight oval along the top of the nose and fill in the bottom part of the oval in black.

Step 2 – Outline the Muzzle

From the right side of the nose, curve down and bend up to form the top edge of the muzzle. Round out the edge of the muzzle and pull it back in. Align the top of the muzzle on the left side of the nose, curl around, and bend towards the bottom of the head. Work your way back up towards the right side, going across and then up.

Step 3 – Draw the Mouth

Shift the mouth over towards the top right. Start with a bracket shape, then draw a line from the center of the bracket down and in to form the mouth.

Remember, sketching is about practice and patience. Use your pencils to shade and give depth, and let your eraser be your friend to refine those features. Keep your drawing techniques fluid, and don’t worry about making it perfect on the first try. With these steps, you’re well on your way to creating a character sketch that stands out!

Adding Details to Sonic

When you know how to draw Sonic, you can bring your sketch to life. Let’s dive into the steps to add those crucial details.

Step 4 – Draw the Eyes

From the top edge of the nose, step up and add the fold down towards the muzzle, then bend up. Draw the top of the right eye, rounding it out and bending it back in towards the muzzle. Layer the left eye behind, starting from the inside of the brow, curving out, and bending up. From the top, step down and draw the side of the eye going out and back in.

Step 5 – Draw the Irises

On the right eye, draw a large oval for the iris, starting from the top, going down, and back up. For the left iris, draw from the brow, curving down and in, then curling up underneath the brow. Trace the inside of the irises, maintaining an even space all around.

Step 6 – Draw the Pupils and Highlights

Add a small circle along the top of the right pupil for a highlight, and fill in the bottom. Repeat for the left pupil.

Step 7 – Draw the Head and Ears

From the bottom of the right eye, step out and follow the curve around, going up towards the brow, rounding the top, and bending in. Add a fold along the top of the right eye. Draw the right ear on top of the brow, going up and out. Trace the inside of the ear, following the curve and connecting at the bottom.

Step 8 – Draw the Spikes

Draw the top of the head from the brow, curving up and bending across behind the ear. Continue the curve on the right side. Tuck the left ear behind the head, curving up, out, and down. Trace the bottom edge of the ear and taper back in towards the head. Draw the large second spike behind the ear, tapering it back towards the body.

Step 9 – Draw the Body and Arms

Start the right arm under the head, curving down and out towards the wrist. Overlap the cuff on top of the arm, rounding it out. Follow the curve of the arm, tucking it under the cuff. Draw the palm and fingers, layering one finger at a time.

Step 10 – Draw the Legs

From the body, draw the right leg curving down and out towards the ankle. Round out the foot and follow the curve up. Repeat for the left leg, bending it up towards the knee and rounding out the knee.

Step 11 – Add Details to the Body

Draw the patch on the left side of the body, following the curve. Wrap the cuff around the right leg, curving the foot around and bending it towards the tip. Repeat for the left leg and add a thick sole along the right side of each foot.

Step 12 – Draw the Tail and Final Details

From the hip, draw the tail tapering out and back in. Add stripes and separation lines on the cuffs and feet.

We’ve covered how to draw Sonic, starting with understanding the basics. We then moved to sketching, and finally, adding details.

Drawing can be fun and easy when you follow these steps.
