How to Draw and Color a Cartoon Illustration of Lionel Messi

by | Jul 1, 2024 | 0 comments

What’s up everyone and welcome to the drawing club! In today’s tutorial, we’re creating a cartoon illustration of Lionel Messi.

Step 1: Draw the Eyes

Start with the left eye. Draw a circle from the top, curving down towards the bottom and back up to the top. Leave a gap and draw the same-sized circle on the right. Add a small highlight circle on the top left side of each eye. Fill in the bottom of the eyes in black, leaving the highlight circles white.

Step 2: Draw the Nose and Mouth

Move to the center and draw the bottom edge of the nose. Start on the left and curve down, then back up. Step up and draw a short curve across the bridge of the nose. From the center of the nose, step down and add the mouth. Curve down from the left, up in the middle, and down again towards the right. Add a short curve for the lower lip.

Step 3: Draw the Eyebrows and Beard

Draw the eyebrows starting from the outside, curving up and down towards the inside. Repeat on the right side. From the inside of the eyebrows, draw a short line going up and taper down towards the point. Fill in the eyebrows in black. For the beard, start at the corners of the mouth, draw the beard line coming around and up underneath the lip. From the outside of the eyes, draw the edge of the beard curving down and in on both sides. Curl the beard up and in towards the side of the nose.

Step 4: Draw the Head and Hair

From the side of the head, draw the jawline coming down and curving in towards the chin. Layer the beard down towards the center by stepping up, curving down, and repeating on both sides. Draw the side of the head going straight up and bending in around the eyebrow. From these points, move to the center of the head, curve up and out towards the right, and add a curl going around and down, tapering back up and in. Sweep the hair over towards the left side, layering as you go by stepping out, curving up and down, and curling in towards the center.

Step 5: Draw the Ears

Add the ears by drawing a curve up, down, and then in on both sides of the head. Draw a fold across the top of the ear with a curve. Close out the side of the head, starting underneath the curl, coming down, and bending in towards the top of the ear.

Step 6: Draw the Body

Start from the left side underneath the beard, curve out and down towards the hip. Repeat on the right side. Connect the hips with a curve going down and up in the middle. Add the number 10 in the center of the body by drawing two straight lines side by side for the one, and an oval for the zero, tracing along the inside.

Step 7: Draw the Legs and Feet

From the center of the body, step down and draw a curve going up and down. Leave a small gap in the center, then draw the legs curving out and down towards the heels. Round out the bottom of the feet by curving down and up on both sides. Draw the top of the feet by curving up and down towards the heel, leaving a gap inside. Draw the outside of the legs by curving out and down, and the inside of the legs curving up towards the center. Add a thick sole along the bottom of the feet by duplicating the curve above. Step up and add a curve for the sock, and repeat.

Step 8: Draw the Arms

Draw the arms starting halfway between the top and bottom of the body. Curve the arm out and down towards the wrist on both sides. Draw a small half-circle for the thumb and close off the end with a bracket. Add three fingers starting from the bottom of the thumb, curving down and up around the bracket. Bend the arm back up and in towards the head. Separate the sleeve by drawing a curve halfway along the inside of the arm.

Step 9: Add Details

Add a thin trim on the left side of the sleeve. On the right side, draw a large armband by stepping up towards the top and following the same curve. Add another stripe on the outside of the arm. Finish by signing your artwork and adding a splash of color.

That’s it! There you have it, a cartoon illustration of Lionel Messi. I hope you enjoyed today’s lesson. If you did, please make sure you subscribe because I’m posting new lessons every single day.
